The Kansas City Chiefs have been very active ahead of the NFL trade deadline, but they've also been unwilling to trade away premium draft capital to acquire a player.

New Orleans Saints CB Marshon Lattimore was perhaps the biggest name involved in trade talks as the 3:00 p.m. CT Nov. 5 deadline inches closer. The Chiefs already made deals to acquire WR DeAndre Hopkins from the Tennessee Titans and DE Joshua Uche from the New England Patriots. They've also been connected to Lattimore, with ESPN's Adam Schefter reporting the team's interest on multiple occasions over the last few days.

As it turns out, the Chiefs weren't willing to get into a bidding war to acquire Lattimore. According to a new report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Commanders are acquiring Lattimore from the Saints for a "premium pick." The Saints trade Lattimore and a fifth-round pick to the Commanders for a third-, a fourth-, and a sixth-round pick.

Lattimore, of course, was taken with the No. 11 pick in the 2017 NFL draft after Kansas City leap-frogged the Saints to secure star QB Patrick Mahomes. He won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2017 and has consistently been the Saints’ top cornerback every year since then, notching four Pro Bowl selections including three straight from 2019-2021.

Health has been an issue for Lattimore lately, as he missed New Orleans' Week 9 game against the Carolina Panthers with a hamstring injury. In 97 career regular season games, Lattimore has notched 405 combined tackles, seven tackles for loss, five forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, 88 passes defended, 15 interceptions, and two pick-sixes.

Why the Chiefs opted against a bidding war with the Commanders

One reason outside of draft capital that might have played a role in the Chiefs' unwillingness to get into a bidding war with the Commanders for Lattimore, was something revealed during their Week 9 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In his first start of the year, Chiefs CB Joshua Williams allowed just two receptions on four targets for 18 yards per PFF.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid had this to say about Williams after the overtime thriller on Monday.

"2 (Joshua Williams) showed up today," Reid said. "(He) had a big challenge, stepping in and being a starter, and I thought he did a nice job for us."

Kansas City's coaching staff has shown confidence in Williams and that's not for nothing. For the most part, when his number has been called, he's risen to the occasion.
