The Kansas City Chiefs have some major position battles going on within their team, and one of them is the backup offensive tackle position.
The Chiefs have a few position battles going on when training camp starts on July 23. Of course, there is the deep receiver room and the four or five guys that are fighting for the last three spots.
We also expect the battle to happen in the linebacker room between Nick Bolton, Drue Tranquill, Willie Gay, and Leo Chenal. But, one position battle needs to be discussed more – the offensive tackle position.
This offseason has seen a lot of drama surrounding the Chiefs' offensive tackle position. Now we know that Donovan Smith will likely be the starting left tackle, and Jawaan Taylor will likely be the starting right tackle. However, we don't know who will be the backups at each position.
Two players are fighting for the second-string position at both left and right tackle. Here are the guys battling for a spot on the roster:
Offensive tackle position battles in training camp
Lucas Niang, RT

Niang was drafted by the Chiefs a few years ago and didn't play his rookie season due to some family COVID issues. Since then, he has also dealt with some injuries, and there is belief that he will one day be ready to be a starting right tackle.
The Chiefs coaches and media love Niang and the abilities he has. A lot of the issues just stem from injuries. Niang is battling for that backup right tackle spot with Sebastian Gutierrez and Chukwuebuka Godrick.
The other two have everything to lose and are bubble roster guys. Chukwuebuka is an undrafted free agent – so the intensity will be brought by the two. They are trying to take Niang's spot, which isn't safe, which makes this a position battle.
Niang has the upper hand in this position battle because he has been with the team for some time now and already knows the scheme. But, as we said earlier, that doesn't mean the backup spot is his.
Wanya Morris, OT

Morris played right tackle at Oklahoma in college and was drafted as a right tackle. When he was drafted, most thought he was the right tackle of the future. Of course, this was before the Donovan Smith signing. Now, there is a thought that the Chiefs will try and develop him at left tackle.
Either way, he is battling for a backup position for either side. Morris is a rookie, and the scheme can be hard to learn, but it has been done before. The Chiefs started Niang a few games as a rookie (second season, first season playing), and Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith their entire rookie seasons.
If an injury were to happen, and it did last year with Smith as he battled through them, Morris is a guy we could see get trusted into that position, whether it be on the left or right side. The rookie is in a position battle with Lucas Niang and Prince Tega-Wanogho, who have both been backups for a while and want a role on the 53-man roster.
Prince Tega Wanogho, LT

Tega Wanogho has been with the Chiefs for three years and is going into his fourth as a former sixth-round pick. He has everything to lose. If he doesn't show improvements, the Chiefs could be willing to move on from him after his contract is up.
That's why we can expect him to bring it all to this training camp. There are battles, positions, and roles to be had. Tega Wanogho needs one, as he has been on the inactive list a few times in his career, and when he does play, as he has played 20 games in his career, he doesn't have a huge role. Watch for him in training camp to bring his best for a position battle, probably for the left tackle position with rookie Wanya Morris.
The Chiefs offseason hasn't been what we are used to; in fact, it's been weird in a way. However, it makes for better offseason stories. This training camp is huge, not only because the Chiefs are about to try and to be the first team to repeat since the New England Patriots, but also because of the battles we will see.
Chiefs Training Camp Battle: Wide Receiver
The Kansas City Chiefs have a big question entering the 2023 season, but now we will soon know an answer to it.
