The Kansas City Chiefs are in pads on Sunday, marking their first padded practice of 2025 NFL training camp.
With the introduction of pads, the Chiefs had two players taken off the PUP list, allowing them to return to practice in some capacity. That included rookie TE Tre Watson and starting RT Jawaan Taylor. FOX 4 Kansas City's Harold R. Kuntz spotted Taylor coming down the hill in pads ahead of practice.
For Watson, this is the first time he's practiced since the Chiefs' rookie minicamp. For Taylor, this follows what Andy Reid said about his pending return when he was placed on the PUP list at the onset of camp.
"So I tell you, Jawaan (Taylor) is probably closer (to returning) right now," Reid said.
What does Chiefs RT Jawaan Taylor's return to action mean for Josh Simmons and Jaylon Moore?
A big question surrounding Taylor's return to action was what it'd do to the starting offensive tackles from the first four days of camp? Josh Simmons and Jaylon Moore were the starting duo for the first four practices. Would that remain the same, or would one of Simmons or Moore get bumped to the second-team offensive line?
We have our answers, at least initially. Things could, of course, change down the line.
Simmons remained as the starting left tackle during the earliest team periods, while Taylor regained his role as the starting right tackle before Moore rotated in for Taylor with the starting lineup. This seems like a reasonable solution as Taylor works his way back into things. It also sets Moore up to play that swing tackle role in Kansas City, which has been the predominant thought ever since the Chiefs drafted Simmons.
One new injury for the Chiefs to begin Sunday's practice session
The Chiefs had one new player missing from practice due to injury: Rookie TE Jake Briningstool.
KSHB TV's Matt Foster snapped a photo of Briningstool heading down the hill toward practice, with a compression sleeve on his left leg, padless and wearing a hat. That's all typically indicative of a player who won't participate in practice, and that was the case for the rookie. He worked on the sidelines with other player who remain on the PUP list, CB Kristian Fulton.
Briningstool was one of the early standouts of training camp, while working with the first-team offense. He dealt with an undisclosed injury during OTAs and mandatory minicamp, so this could be a reaggravation of that injury.
We'll hear from Andy Reid after practice on the rookie's status and update you here, but perhaps Briningstool is an early candidate for the 2025 NFL season's injured reserve stash.
