With less than a week to go, the Chiefs and DT Chris Jones have yet to come to an agreement on a long-term contract extension. Brett Veach did strike a positive tone regarding negotiations when speaking to the media on Wednesday, but Jones has yet to end his holdout.
On the first episode of the second season of his "New Heights Show" podcast, Kelce addressed Jones' holdout while speaking with his brother.
"Oh, man, Chris (Jones), can you please come back," Kelce pleaded, comedically. "You're really scaring me, man. I don't get it. You must know something that I don't know because I just don't get it. I really want to get another Super Bowl ring with you brother. This is me just bargaining with you to just come back and play football for the Chiefs. Please, we need you. We need you bad."
While this very much felt like a bit for the podcast, it also felt like there were some hints of truth to what was said. Kelce isn't the only one confused about what the holdout is accomplishing. I hardly doubt the sincerity about wanting Jones back and feeling like the team needs him.
He also struck a more sincere tone as he wrapped up his comments, despite Jason's attempts to keep things lighthearted.
"I don't know what the situation is," Kelce said before his brother pleaded with Jones to extend his holdout until the Eagles and Chiefs play. "He's the best defensive player in the league right now and he's deserving of all the money in the world. Chris, I love you, please come back."
Really, this is the first opportunity outside a press conference setting that we've heard a Chiefs player speak freely about Jones' holdout. We'll see if the message makes any sort of difference or if it falls on deaf ears.
Why Chiefs TE Travis Kelce doesn’t care about T.J. Hockenson’s record-setting deal
Chiefs TE Travis Kelce has made it clear that he cares more about winning and being in Kansas City than having a record-setting contract.
