Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce won't have a 1,000-yard receiving season for the first time since 2015.
The Chiefs announced on Sunday afternoon that TE Travis Kelce had been ruled out of the Week 18 contest against the Los Angeles Chargers due to a coaching decision. Andy Reid opted to hold Kelce out of the game with little reason for any starter to play on Sunday. The team is locked into the No. 3 seed in the AFC conference no matter the results of the Week 18 game.
The team already ruled out QB Patrick Mahomes with a coaching decision as well. Several other starters are expected to miss the game or play sparingly.
It's hard not to wonder if Detroit Lions TE Sam LaPorta suffering a knee injury during the early slate of games had something to do with Andy Reid's decision. No matter, Kelce will still be the NFL leader in consecutive seasons of 1,000 yards receiving by a tight end.
Kelce has seven consecutive seasons dating back to the 2016 NFL season. No other tight end in NFL history has more than three such seasons (Panthers TE Greg Olsen). Kelce needed just 16 yards to reach 1,000 yards receiving for an eighth consecutive season and 17 yards to hit the over.
No. 87 will finish the 2023 NFL regular season with 93 receptions for 984 yards and five touchdowns in 15 games started.
