The Kansas City Chiefs are officially back in the green ahead of the 2026 NFL free agency period when it comes to the salary cap.

After the league announced a $301.2 million salary cap for the 2026 NFL season, the team still had some work to do to get into salary cap compliance ahead of the new league year on March 11. They’ve since officially released RT Jawaan Taylor, clearing $20M in salary cap space with $7.3M in dead money. They’ve also agreed to trade away CB Trent McDuffie, which clears $13.6M in salary cap space due on his fifth-year option.

So, where do these two moves leave the Chiefs in terms of salary cap space?

The Chiefs went from the league’s worst salary cap situation, sitting at $52.7 million over the cap, to now having the 14th most in the league. According to the folks at OverTheCap, the Chiefs now have $24.8 million in salary cap space available as things stand after the Jawaan Taylor release and the Trent McDuffie trade.

They’re now in a position to be competitive and attempt to retain some of their own free agents, but also come out swinging during the legal tampering period to try and fill some key needs ahead of the draft. Brett Veach has bought the team some flexibility, which opens the team up to new possibilities in free agency. Really, the whole thing shows fans just how malleable the NFL salary cap can be.

Keep in mind, the trade for McDuffie added three new 2026 NFL Draft picks to the Chiefs’ rookie salary cap pool. They went from needing just over $7 million to sign their draft class to needing practically $10 million now. The Chiefs are unlikely to make all of those picks, as Brett Veach is known to spin a few trades to move up and down the draft board. That said, the Chiefs are effectively operating with $14.8M in available space.

The best thing about their current situation is that the team still has ways to create more salary cap space beyond the space they’ve already cleared. Drue Tranquill, Noah Gray, Jaylon Moore, and Kristian Fulton have savings on their contracts if they were released.

There’s currently an unconfirmed report floating around that the Chiefs have restructured DT Chris Jones’ contract. I’d be surprised to see them do that, unless they only restructure a small portion of the deal. They can create up to $60 million in salary cap space with simple restructures of Jones, Harrison Butker, Nick Bolton, Creed Humphrey, George Karlaftis, and Trey Smith. I would expect some more of these simple restructures to give the team even further flexibility.
