The Kansas City Chiefs find themselves in a unique situation with their referee assignment for Week 12 vs. the Indianapolis Colts.

Rookie NFL referee Alex Moore has been assigned the Chiefs-Colts game, as first reported by Football Zebras. Moore has been one of the NFL’s fastest-rising officials, spending just three years as an umpire for both Bill Vinovich and Shawn Smith before being promoted to referee. He cut his teeth in officiating, working in the SEC and AAC, and even served as a referee in the 2022 USFL season, officiating the 2022 USFL Championship Game.

Chiefs draw Alex Moore’s officiating crew for the first time in Week 12 vs. Colts

Moore has officiated three Kansas City games as an umpire in the NFL, but Week 12 vs. Indianapolis will be his first as the head referee. He’s also been an umpire for four Colts games, with a single win and three losses in those games. The three prior games he officiated for the Chiefs as an umpire were all wins for Kansas City (cue NFL officiating conspiracies).

Alex Moore’s history with the Chiefs as an umpire

  • Week 4 of 2022: Chiefs 41, Buccaneers 31 (Bill Vinovich)
  • Week 4 of 2024: Chiefs 17, Chargers 10 (Shawn Smith)
  • Week 12 of 2024: Chiefs 30, Panthers 27 (Shawn Smith)

Unfortunately for K.C., this isn’t the best crew to have coming off a game where you had double-digit penalty numbers. As if the scrutiny surrounding officiating Chiefs games isn’t enough, Moore’s crew currently leads the NFL in total flags thrown with 166. The distribution of those flags has been pretty equal. A total of 82 flags have been thrown on the home team, while 84 flags have been thrown on the away team. His crew currently averages 3.14 more penalties called per game than the league average and over 22.58 more in penalty yardage per game than the NFL’s average crew.

Steve Spagnuolo’s defense will have to be extra careful in this game as Moore’s crew has called more roughing the pass penalties (10) than any other crew in the NFL. No other crew has called more than seven roughing the passer penalties. It’s also another game where Jawaan Taylor could come under scrutiny, as the crew leads the NFL with 35 false start penalties.
