After getting some devastating injury news on rookie left tackle Josh Simmons, the Kansas City Chiefs are getting a welcome injury update on one of their starting safeties. Bryan Cook left the Week 13 game against the Dallas Cowboys in the first quarter after tackling CeeDee Lamb on a 17-yard gain. He got his ankle taped up on the sideline before eventually returning to the game.

Cook played a few more snaps, but he was ultimately pulled from the game, deemed questionable with an ankle injury. He didn’t return to the game despite the team never ruling him out with the injury. It left the Chiefs extremely shorthanded at safety with Chris Roland-Wallace not playing, and Andy Reid confirmed afterward that Cook suffered a right ankle sprain.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that Cook avoided the dreaded high-ankle sprain, which is an injury that can keep players out for 2-6 weeks. Fowler says that Cook is still awaiting more information on the injury he sustained, but ruling out a high-ankle sprain increases the likelihood that he’ll be available for Week 14 vs. the Houston Texans.

The Chiefs are likely acting out of an abundance of caution with Cook, given his significant ankle injury in 2023. That injury ended his season as he ruptured his “tightrope” ligament and tore his deltoid ligament in a game against the Green Bay Packers. That was his left ankle, and the new injury is in his right ankle, according to Coach Reid.

In 12 games started this season, Cook has 50 total tackles, one tackle for loss, and four passes defended.

Chiefs still awaiting word on RT Jawaan Taylor’s elbow injury

With injury updates on Simmons and Cook in hand, the only other player to exit Week 13’s game with injury is starting right tackle Jawaan Taylor. He suffered an elbow injury and was eventually ruled out of the game due to his injury. It’s still unclear how severe Taylor’s injury is and whether he’ll be able to play in Week 14 vs. the Texans. Knowing what Taylor played through a season ago, I suspect it’d take a pretty substantial injury to sideline him. Either way, it’s a less-than-ideal situation going up against the Texans’ pass-rushing duo of Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter, without your starting left tackle and possibly without your starting right tackle.
