The Kansas City Chiefs weren't able to get a first-round tackle or receiver when it was their turn to pick at pick number 31 in the 2023 NFL Draft. But, they were able to get a pass rusher that has elite potential.
Not only is he a hometown kid from Kansas City that was drafted to Kansas City in the city of Kansas City, but he was also very good at football. This is a guy who showed that he can get to the quarterback almost whenever he wanted.
But he also showed that he can be valuable in the run game as well. The Chiefs had him as their highest-ranked player remaining and needed another edge rusher after letting Frank Clark go in the offseason.
Here is what they are getting in Anudike-Uzomah:
Measureables
Height: 6' foot 3"
Weight: 255 Pounds
40: 4.73 Seconds
What he does well
Here's what A to Z Sports' Tyler Browning says about his motor, effort and ability to anchor:
Generally a high motor player, will chase down ball carriers sideline to sideline. There are times where he appears uninterested in being on the field and gives minimal effort. Can cross face of offensive linemen with ease. Has shown he can be effective on receiving open gaps on stunt plays. Improved in 2022, became much more able to move laterally across the line. Has shown he can anchor in after giving up some initial ground. Has shown he can two gap. Can stunt, and eat up blocks making open holes for LBs to step up and fill. Doesn’t have the frame to hold his own against double team
Where he can improve
The Athletic's Dane Brugler had this to say about some of Bresee's shortcomings:
Short-striding rusher with only average get-off and lateral quickness … stiff at the top of his rush and struggles to flip his hips/shoulders around the corner (physical offensive tackles can toss him) … physical, strong hands, but his secondary moves and counters aren’t as thought out as his initial attack … speed-topower has inconsistent results, often stalling out because of inconsistent leverage … average base strength in the run game, especially versus doubles, and will lose edge contain … inexperienced dropping into coverage to defend quick routes … underwent minor offseason knee surgery (January 2022) and missed spring practice; didn’t work out at the combine because of a right foot injury (March 2023)
Where he fits in
The Chiefs are banking on Anudike-Uzomah to be a starter sometime in the 2023 season. While Mike Danna could start the season as the starter, Anudike-Uzomah is the guy they want to pair with George Karlaftis to be an elite duo. He will be a defensive end that plays in that stand up position as a five or even seven technique guy. Spagnuolo will love having him, and will use him in as many ways as possible.
