Expectations are big for this second-year QB, who is coming off being named the 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year. Let's dive in. . .
No. 8: Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels
The Commanders selected Daniels with the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and committed to him as their starting QB right off the bat. He rewarded them by starting all 20 games (including three in the postseason) and recording 4,390 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, and a 68.3 completion percentage.
Daniels is already one of the most dangerous dual-threat QBs in the league, racking up 1,026 rushing yards and seven TDs. He led Washington to a 12-5 record and a Cinderella run to the NFC Championship Game, falling to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.
The Commanders are entering the 2025 season as a legitimate Super Bowl contender, and Daniels an MVP candidate. He has plenty of weapons to work with, including former All-Pro wide receivers Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel, as well as tight end Zach Ertz and running backs Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler.
When the Commanders travel to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs in Week 8, it will be the first ever matchup between Daniels and Patrick Mahomes. Both could be in the top 5 of the MVP race, so whoever wins could get a leg up chasing the accolade. This game will be under the Arrowhead Stadium lights on Monday Night Football with the whole world watching.
Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will have his work cut out for him trying to defend Daniels, both as a passer and runner. Spagnuolo has had success against dual-threat QBs in the past such as Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and Russell Wilson. Washington's offense could provide the Chiefs' defense with one of its toughest challenges of the entire season, and it may be a Super Bowl preview.
