Everyone knew the Kansas City Chiefs were just flat-out not a good football team. However, on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, their flaws were further exposed. It’s now clear just how much quarterback Patrick Mahomes was covering up because of how good he is.

The Chiefs’ flaws are much worse than we all realized without Mahomes

Last week, Mahomes tore his ACL against the Los Angeles Chargers. This would be the first game he wouldn’t play after having the surgery to repair his ACL. Backup quarterback and former Jackson Jaguars, Las Vegas Raiders, and Indianapolis Colts starter Gardner Minshew started on Sunday. Unfortunately, his day didn’t last long, as he also ended up tearing his ACL.

Even when Minshew was in, the Chiefs looked terrible on both sides of the ball. In the first quarter, both teams had everyone thinking the game could end in a 0-0 tie. Soon, Tennessee scored first, but by way of a safety on the Chiefs.

Before this game, the Tennessee Titans were a two-win team and held maybe the highest odds of landing the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Now, they have three wins. That’s how bad the Titans are, and yet, the Chiefs let Tennessee do whatever it wanted.

Mahomes has been so good this year, or is just so good in general, that it’s blinded some of us in how we evaluate the team. With Patrick Mahomes, this game isn’t close in the Chiefs’ favor. However, he’s so valuable and great that, without him, they get blown out 26-9.

This loss was needed. It’s going to help show the front office how bad a team they really are if you take the greatest football player on earth out of the equation. Honestly, that’s what you want, too. It seems this front office has been blinded by a ton of the team’s flaws because Mahomes helps mask how bad they really are.

Not having him out there should help show the front office which areas of the team they need to attack the hardest. And, it’s not just the offense – the defense and special teams got eaten up on Sunday.
