It’s been said every week now for the last few weeks, but this game against the Los Angeles Chargers is a must-win for the Kansas City Chiefs. If they want to make the playoffs and keep their streaks alive of appearances and possibly AFC Championship appearances, they’ll have to play lights out.

Kansas City has never been in this position before. Ever since quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been on the team as a starter, the franchise has gone to at least an AFC Championship. They’ve won three Super Bowls and been to five. So, of course, this team still has a bit of confidence about pulling through when they need to most.

“Listen, we got Pat Mahomes, man. Let’s be honest here — we always have a chance,” defensive tackle Chris Jones told reporters this week when asked about the playoff chances dwindling.

Chiefs’ playoff chances are slipping away, but Mahomes is capable of pulling through

The entire team does not win or lose on the back of Mahomes. However, he is who he is because of what he’s done when it matters most. In the league, and maybe in league history, there isn’t a more clutch player. Whether it be fourth-quarter comebacks, game-winning drives, overtime wins, or anything else, Mahomes is the guy.

Now, he has to pull his team through to the finish line. He needs help, as he can’t do it all by himself. We saw in the last game against the Houston Texans that he can’t throw the ball and catch it at the same time. When he’s the quarterback, though, there is always a chance – Jones isn’t wrong.

“I don’t know what the percentages are, but I know they’re not high,” Mahomes said on Wednesday. “I think it’d be special if we get into the playoffs and we can make a run,” Mahomes told reporters on Wednesday.”

This is setting up to be one of the best storylines the Chiefs have ever had, if they can pull this off. However, it wouldn’t mean much if they got there to lose in the first round. If they’re going to go all in for this push for a comeback, they have to go all in.

Last game, unfortunately, Mahomes and Jones were the only two guys on the field for the Chiefs who ever looked like they wanted the win, let alone wanted to be there. Jones had his insane third-quarter takeover, and he was letting everyone know he was ready for whatever. Mahomes was doing whatever he could to help the offense, like throwing himself into a pile to push the ball over the first down line, or tucking it and running over and over again without sliding.

They need that Sunday, but from more than just those two if the Chiefs really want to keep on pushing for a spot in the playoffs.
