Colts HC Shane Steichen makes it clear he won’t be falling for what may be a misconception regarding the Chiefs

The Chiefs are not fooling the Colts with their 2025 record.

The Kansas City Chiefs, currently 5-5 in 2025 after losing to the Denver Broncos, are playing a brand of football that few, if any, anticipated from a team seemingly at the end of its dynasty. This record, however, does not reflect the full story. The Indianapolis Colts are acutely aware of the challenge they are about to face.

“Well, I mean, we know they’ve been incredible, and they’re still an incredible team this year. I mean, you look at them statistically, they’re at the top of every category,” Colts HC Shane Steichen told reporters on Wednesday.

“And so, we know we’re going into a hostile environment against a damn good football team… I think, for whatever reason, some of those games just haven’t gone their way. And they’re in every single game. They’re right there. If the ball bounces one way one game, ball bounces the other game, shoot, they win all of them. So, they’re a hell of a football team and we’ve got to be ready to go.”

Shane Steichen is all too familiar with the Chiefs

Steichen isn’t going to be fooled by that 5-5 record. Then again, it’s easy for any coach to look at the Chiefs when they are on their schedule and just know you have to play/coach against Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Chris Jones, Trent McDuffie, Andy Reid, and Steve Spagnuolo every single season. The record doesn’t mean much when those are the constant variables.

And Steichen knows what it’s like to face those guys. He did it in the Super Bowl when he was the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles. Of course, that was the time the Chiefs actually beat Philadelphia in the Super Bowl, not the last time, when the final score was very lopsided in favor of the Eagles.

This iteration of KC is very different, yet very similar, according to the Colts head coach.

“I still think they’re coached really, really well. I’ve got so much respect for Coach (Andy) Reid and what he’s done in his career. I mean, his resume speaks for itself. They do a hell of a job (on) offense, defense, special teams,” Steichen continued.

“They’ve got a good veteran presence. Obviously, the quarterback is one of the best in the world. So, we’ve got to be on it with our details and everything we do. We know it’s going to be loud – handle the noise, all those different things that we’ve got to do this week to go be successful.”

What’s happening in 2025 for the Chiefs is weird, to say the least. When you look at the stats, on both sides of the ball, this team looks great. You would think the Chiefs are better than 5-5, given how they’re playing. However, when you watch them play, this team is not at all what you’d expect a team with an arrowhead on its helmet to look like.

2025’s Chiefs are much more talented than last year’s, on paper. However, last year, the Chiefs just found a way to win, regardless of the obstacle. This season, the Chiefs are 0-5 in one-score games, and they just don’t seem to have that same fire they always played with.

Kansas City is just going through the motions right now. They are just doing enough to be in games, not enough to win games. And, there’s no real passion anymore. That’s what it looks like on the sideline – like the dynasty has taken away their love for the game.

So Steichen may not know who he is facing this time around.
