The Kansas City Chiefs have lost another one of their own free agents and they can only blame themselves on this one.
According to his agency, Katz Brothers Sports, former Chiefs TE Jody Fortson is signing a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins. Fortson was slated to be a restricted free agent this offseason, but Kansas City decided against extending a qualifying offer. They maintained they had an interest in bringing him back, but they'll now go their separate ways with the Chiefs also signing Irv Smith Jr. in free agency.
The 6-foot-4 and 226-pound tight end first joined Kansas City as an undrafted free agent wide receiver out of Valdosta State University in 2019. He spent his entire rookie season on the practice squad in Kansas City through Super Bowl LIV. Injuries have hampered his career. He first made the active roster in 2021, appearing in just six games before suffering a torn Achilles. He missed the 2023 NFL season with a shoulder injury.
Throughout his entire tenure with Kansas City, Fortson appeared in just 21 games with two career starts (including postseason). He amassed 14 receptions for 199 yards and four touchdowns in those games. He'll leave the Chiefs as a three-time Super Bowl champion.
