According to a report from Fox Sports NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, Eric Bieniemy has spoken with multiple NFL teams about joining their coaching staffs. It was also believed that he would have gotten the New England Patriots' offensive coordinator position had they not been able to land Josh McDaniels, which they did last week.
Despite missing out on that job, it appears that Bieniemy will have other options. If he doesn't get an offensive coordinator gig, he may be willing to be a position coach. Bieniemy served as a running backs coach for multiple teams spanning 15 years in both the college ranks and pros.
Running back is where his roots are, as he played nine season in the NFL (1991-1999) at the position. Bieniemy would eventually earn the Kansas City Chiefs' offensive coordinator job in 2018. Kansas City had some historic offensive units under Bieniemy, including being ranked first overall three times (2018, 2020, 2022).
Bieniemy had several head coaching interviews throughout his five-year tenure as the Chiefs' OC, but was unable to secure one. He left K.C. after the 2022 season to be the Washington Commanders' OC and assistant HC under Ron Rivera, but was not retained in 2023 by new Commanders HC Dan Quinn following the firing of Rivera.
Following that, Bieniemy decided to return to the college ranks and became the OC for UCLA, where he was the RB coach from 2003-2004. Bieniemy couldn't get things going for the Bruins and was fired at the conclusion of the season as his offense ranked 117th in yards and 126th in points per game.
There are several OC vacancies remaining in the NFL. It is unknown who Bieniemy has been in talks with, but there are several teams who have very appealing offenses, such as the Houston Texans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Regardless of where Bieniemy ends up, he has coached offense at the highest level and has worked with many superstars.
