The Kansas City Chiefs have a contingency plan ready for star cornerback L'Jarius Sneed. Should they not agree on a long-term extension that keeps him in Kansas City, Sneed has been permitted to seek a trade in a tag-and-trade scenario.

ESPN's Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler recently unveiled a massive article on free agency, trade, and draft buzz from the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. They provided a substantial update on Sneed, mentioning two teams as logical suitors in a tag-and-trade scenario.

Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions are teams to watch for Chiefs CB L'Jarius Sneed:

The cornerback position is a hot topic in the league right now and Sneed is at the center of trade discussions per Fowler. He says that multiple teams are expected to be in the mix and named two clubs in particular as the ones to watch.

"Cornerback was a popular position of discussion in Indy, most notably for the trade market. We know the Chiefs are working on a potential tag-and-trade with L'Jarius Sneed, and multiple teams are believed to be in the mix there. The word out of Indy is that Detroit is pretty set on adding a high-end corner, so the Lions are one to watch. Miami is worth keeping an eye on, too."

Rumors began to swirl about Detroit as a potential landing spot for Sneed as early as Wednesday, Feb. 28. His aggressive and physical playstyle certainly fits Lions HC Dan Campbell.

In addition to the Lions and Dolphins, A to Z Sports has learned that the Atlanta Falcons have expressed interest, but there is a hold-up in that scenario. The timeline for a tag-and-trade to occur with Kansas City might not sync up with Atlanta's timeline. Securing their quarterback-of-the-future is the club's first order of business, and if that requires draft capital or certain cap $$$, it might take them out of the running for Sneed. The Chiefs would prefer a trade be consummated before the free agency begins to shed the cost of Sneed's franchise tag ($19.8M fully guaranteed).

Trade compensation could include multiple Day 2 picks:

Our initial estimation of trade compensation might have been on the conservative side. I felt that given his resume, a top-100 pick and a late-round pick in 2024 were the best-case scenario, but it sounds like Brett Veach is firm in his asking price. Multiple sources have suggested that the Chiefs could receive as many as two picks on Day 2 in 2024 for Sneed, with a Day 3 pick swap between the two clubs in 2025 where KC would send back a higher pick. That's even with recent rumors about some teams flagging Sneed's lingering knee injury as a potential issue (keep in mind, he only missed preseason games with that injury).

The Lions, of course, have two picks available in Round 3 in the 2024 NFL draft. Moving off of a second-round pick (61) and a third-round pick (92) is much easier when you have an extra pick in that range (73). The Dolphins do not have a high level of draft capital in 2024, with Pick No. 55 in Round 2 being their lone pick on Day 2 as things currently stand. They might have to find a way to sweeten the deal to get something done with Kansas City.
