On Monday, ESPN gave Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes plenty of motivation for the AFC Championship game this upcoming weekend against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Dan Orvlosky, a former NFL player turned ESPN analyst, said on Monday that he thinks Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is the best quarterback in the NFL right now.

Orvloskly pointed out that he still thinks Mahomes is the best player in the league, before suggesting that Burrow can read defenses better than Mahomes. He also implied that Burrow plays the position better than Mahomes.

“Joe Burrow’s the best quarterback in football,” said Orvlosky.

“Chiefs fans, Patrick [Mahomes] is the best player," added Orvlosky. "Patrick is the most talented quarterback that’s ever stepped foot on an NFL field. But when it comes to quarterbacking and understanding defenses, and understanding play calls and how to attack defenses, the timing — Joe’s the best. He’s the best going right now when it comes to all the things that we could write down about what it takes to play quarterback at a high level. He does it all exceptionally well. And he’s the guy that really is the model for what quarterbacks should be in the future."

It's not like Orvlosky is slamming Mahomes, but he's certainly insinuating that Mahomes' special moments when he goes off schedule are what makes him great.

And while that's certainly a part of Mahomes' game, it's not all he does. That's just one part of Mahomes' greatness. He can also carve up a defense while standing in the pocket. Mahomes is incredibly smart. He knows how to attack defenses. And many of his passes — especially the throws to tight end Travis Kelce — only work because of his timing.

Mahomes won't be as mobile as usual this weekend against the Bengals, so he'll have to play the position in a more traditional sense. These comments from Orvlosky should give him plenty of motivation to play at a high level despite his sprained ankle.

Not that Mahomes needs the motivation, but it certainly never hurts. Just ask the Bengals, who seem to thrive on that sort of thing.
