ESPN thinks a former Pro-Bowler could be cut by the Kansas City Chiefs before the start of the 2022 season.
Adam Teicher, who covers the Chiefs for ESPN, suggested this week that wide receiver Josh Gordon is on the roster bubble entering training camp.
The top four at wide receiver will be difficult for Gordon to crack after the Chiefs signed JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling and drafted Skyy Moore and with Mecole Hardman returning. The Chiefs are unlikely to retain Gordon as a fifth or sixth wide receiver without him helping on special teams, so the math doesn't look good for him.
Gordon, who reached the Pro-Bowl in 2013 with the Cleveland Browns, played in 12 games for the Chiefs last season, catching five passes for 32 yards and one touchdown.
The former Baylor standout is an extremely talented player with ideal NFL size. He was downright dominant at times with the Brown in 2013. But he's been suspended by the NFL on numerous occasions (including three suspensions that lasted full seasons). And he just turned 31 (middle-aged by NFL standards).
Considering the risk associated with Gordon, and the fact that he hasn't been a meaningful contributor for an NFL team since 2019, this is an easy call for Kansas City. The added depth would be nice. And if there's an injury during training camp, then perhaps Gordon gets a shot at making the opening day roster. But otherwise, it's hard to see Gordon being a major part of Kansas City's plans in 2022.
