There's been a lot of talk over the past week about Tyrann Mathieu possibly not returning to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022.
Mathieu is the heart and soul of the Chiefs' defense and the team definitely wants him back. But if reaches free agency — and it appears that will be the case — his price could get too high for Kansas City.
ESPN's free agent simulation, however, has some good news for Chiefs fans that are hoping to see the Honey Badger return next season.
They broke down free agency via the offers that each team can likely afford to make. And they have the Chiefs re-signing Mathieu over the New York Jets and the New Orleans Saints.
Mathieu feels as much a part of the Mount Rushmore for the current Chiefs' roster as any of their other stars, most of whom have been in Kansas City longer. The whole thing wouldn't feel right without him. The Chiefs could use Mathieu much as they have in past seasons, which means he would fill a variety of roles. The team's offseason would be off to a good start by re-signing him

ESPN's Dan Graziano acknowledges that it could be tough for Mathieu to pass up playing for his hometown Saints. But Graziano makes a great point — the Saints are nowhere close to winning right now. We don't even know who the quarterback will be in New Orleans next season.
Mathieu wants to win. And he's comfortable in Kansas City.
If the offers are close, I think he'll return to KC. But if the Saints — or another team — decide to make a ridiculous offer, then it could be time for Chiefs fans to say goodbye to the Honey Badger.
