The interior of the Kansas City Chiefs' offensive line (left guard, center, right guard) has been a strength for the team over the past years.
The Chiefs are still in solid shape with Joe Thuney at LG and Creed Humphrey at C, but may need a new RG to replace Trey Smith, who is currently set to hit free agency in a few weeks. They could have some in-house options to replace Smith, such as C.J. Hanson or Mike Caliendo. Even Kingsley Suamataia could attempt to switch to RG after a failed rookie season at left tackle.
Regardless of what direction it goes, Kansas City will either need a new starting RG, or some quality depth if Smith leaves. The NFL's free agent legal tampering period begins on March 10, with signings able to become official on March 12 – marking the start of the new league year. Let's take a look at some potential interior offensive lineman options for the Chiefs in 2025.
Kevin Zeitler
Zeitler is a 13-year journeyman RG who hasn't been affected by age. In 2023 he was named to his first career Pro Bowl, and last season he recorded a personal best 87.2 run-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus. At 34-years-old, he wouldn't be a long-term solution for K.C., but could hold it down for a year or two for good financial value.
Brandon Scherff
Like Zeitler, Scherff is another longtime veteran RG who could give the Chiefs some bang for their buck in the short-term. He struggled with injuries early in his career, but has started every game over the past three seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Scherff excels in pass protection, which is a plus in coach Andy Reid's offense. He also probably has some familiarity with Reid's system after playing for Doug Pederson (Reid's former offensive coordinator) for three years in Jacksonville.
Zack Martin
Yet another veteran RG, the 33-year-old Martin should still have a couple of good years left in him. He is potentially heading for the Hall of Fame one day, earning nine First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl selections in his career.
Given his age and that his 2024 season was cut short due to ankle surgery, Martin would be very affordable. The Chiefs could potentially sign left tackle Tyron Smith and reunite him with Martin as the two played together with the Dallas Cowboys for 10 years.
Will Hernandez
Hernandez has a nice blend of NFL experience (seven years) and youth (29-years-old). He started every game for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023, and was off to a great start in 2024 before tearing his ACL in Week 5.
Hopefully that occurred early enough in the season for Hernandez to be ready to go for the start of 2025. He is the perfect candidate for a one-year "prove it" deal, and if nothing else could make for quality depth if he can't win the starting job.
Austin Corbett
Corbett has been on an awful run of luck as each of his last three seasons have ended prematurely due to injuries. In the 2022 regular season finale he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament, which also cost him the first four games in 2023. Later that season, he tore his MCL.
Corbett came back in 2024 and switched positions from RG to C, but tore his biceps in Week 5, ending his season yet again. At age 29, there's still time for him get back on track health-wise, and his positional versatility is valuable. However, he'll surely only get a one-year deal and will have to prove he can stay healthy in order to continue his career.
