The Kansas City Chiefs had a special guest in the building ahead of their AFC Championship Game tilt against the Baltimore Ravens.
Andy Reid revealed to reporters during Super Bowl LVIII media availability on Wednesday that he had spoken with Eric Bieniemy since his departure from Washington. He also revealed that the former Chiefs offensive coordinator had been brought in to speak to the offense ahead of the game.
This isn't a major revelation because Bieniemy was spotted at the AFC title game. It's hard to imagine he'd attend the game without having some contact with his former team. However, speaking to the players ahead of the game seems a little more significant than simply watching the team play. It's a gesture that was clearly well-received by the players on offense.
"It's always great to have (Eric Bieniemy) in the building," Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes said. Just being there and the energy that he brings and the mentality he brings, you can feel it. Just because he has that intensity, but he loves it. He loves being there. He loves being a part of the team and being a part of that culture. So, just having him back in the building was really cool. Listening to him talk and his energy, it just kind of got everybody. . . you could ask guys, I think guys had a little bit of (goosebumps) like, 'Hey, EB is back here.'"
As for whether there could be a role in Kansas City for Eric Bieniemy in the future, he is still up for some other jobs as an offensive coordinator. Chiefs HC Andy Reid could not confirm whether he'd have a spot for him on his staff next season, mainly because this season hasn't yet concluded for Kansas City.
"I can't answer the last part because I have no spot right now," Reid said. "But I would tell you that I think his coaching future is great. I'm obviously a big fan of his and we know the things that he can do."
No matter what, the ties in Kansas City remain strong. While Bieniemy is clearly rooting for the success of his former team, the Chiefs are also rooting for him to get the opportunities he justly deserves.
"Obviously, he didn't get that head-coaching opportunity," Mahomes said. "But I'm excited for him to continue to coach football and to continue to make his impact on the game."
