The Kansas City Chiefs will have a new offensive coordinator in 2023 for the first time since the 2018 season.
Eric Bieniemy, the Chiefs' offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022, left Kansas City this week to take over as the Washington Commanders' offensive coordinator.
Bieniemy was also named Washington's assistant head coach.
The expectation in Kansas City is that quarterbacks coach Matt Nagy, a longtime Andy Reid assistant who was the Chiefs' offensive coordinator prior to Bieniemy, will take over as the play-caller in KC in 2023.
As for Bieniemy, he's taking the Washington job in an effort to "prove himself" as an NFL head coach candidate. The idea is that Bieniemy can get out from under Reid's shadow and show that he has an elite offensive mind.
Unfortunately for Bieniemy, that won't be easy in Washington. The Commanders don't have the same offensive talent as the Chiefs, which will undoubtedly make it tougher to replicate the success that Bieniemy had in Kansas City (Patrick Mahomes makes everyone's life easier).
But that won't stop Bieniemy from trying to work his magic in Washington.
Speaking of magic, Bieniemy made sure to send a message and remind folks about his resumé while signing his contract with the Commanders.
Bieniemy signed his deal while wearing his Super Bowl ring from 2019/2020 — a reminder of how elite he's been as a coach.
What a flex by Bieniemy.
If all goes well, this will be a short stint in Washington for Bieniemy. If the Commanders quickly find offensive success in 2023, there should be a long line of teams looking to hire Bieniemy as their head coach.
Of course, that should've been the case for the last few years when it comes to Bieniemy and the opportunity to be a head coach in the NFL.
Maybe this decision for EB will finally do the trick.
