Former Super Bowl champion with the Chiefs had a take about KC that he quickly realized he had to walk back
The Chiefs could have used Justin Reid this last season.
Despite being widely disliked at this stage of his career, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes remains clearly the best in the league.
This season, the Chiefs failed to make the postseason, and admittedly, Mahomes did not play well. However, without him, KC looked like the worst team in football. That only helped show what Mahomes was working with. Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen, playing badly against Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix, showed that Allen is not the guy everyone should be crowning the best.
Justin Reid, a former Super Bowl champion safety with the Chiefs, picked Nix as the best QB in football.
“My opinion would have been Bo Nix, honestly,” Reid said to Kay Adams. “Bo Nix going down, just because I like Bo Nix. Josh, I love Josh. It’s just a political. But Bo with Sean Payton, they just – I don’t know. He’s young, he’s made a ton of mistakes, but I thought that he had a super high ceiling.”
Later, Reid clarified that he believed the question referred only to the remaining quarterbacks in the playoffs. He tried to revise his response but still stood by his original selection of Nix.
Justin Reid claims Mahomes’ play has had to drop
“But when I got there, and the year we won the Super Bowl, he actually had to take down his quarterback play. He was more technical and had better time management. We had a good defense, and we were winning close games. Let’s take a look at the biggest prototypical big dogs that we have,” Reid said while defending his take.
“So Patrick, it was a down year for the Chiefs … That does not mean he’s not the best quarterback. There’s always this conversation: Do you tie quarterback play to production and team wins? Or do you tie quarterback play purely to how that quarterback did? Because to me they’re related. Like how the team performs as a whole is related.”
Mahomes has won three Super Bowls and appeared in five over the last six seasons. This season marked the first time he missed the playoffs, much less the AFC Championship. That’s GOAT material, not just best-in-league status.
We are at the point now where the cool answer when answering this question is to say anyone but Mahomes. Being different is cool. As for Reid, though, he saw it up close and personal every day, and for him to say anything different is absolutely insane. Or, maybe it’s just that, okay, we all know Mahomes is the best, so let’s just exclude him, and who is the next best?
Either way, Mahomes is perfectly fine with all of this. Let everyone continue to doubt him.
