The Kansas City Chiefs' matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.

But the biggest storyline of the game is mostly being ignored this week.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes still has a sprained ankle. And while the Super Bowl will mark three weeks since Mahomes suffered the injury, it's still a high ankle sprain and those don't go away quickly.

NFL Network's James Palmer spoke to Mahomes this week about the ankle and how it will impact his play in the Super Bowl.

Palmer said that Mahomes will test his ankle on Friday and Saturday and that will determine how expansive Kansas City's playbook will be against the Eagles.

"He wants to go out and try to play on Sunday with no restrictions," said Palmer. "The interesting part about it is, they have several plays in their gameplan that he (Mahomes) told me are marked. What he means by that is that they've gone through them last week in Kansas City when they put the game plan in, early in the week, at a slower pace. Now at the end of the week, they're going to try to ramp him up and have him perform them closer to full speed to see if he can do them physically."

Mahomes told Palmer that if he can't run the plays at full speed, they'll be pulled from the game plan.

As for the status of the ankle?

Well, Mahomes feels like he's in a better place than he was in the AFC Championship game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

"But he does believe, as he told me, that he's in a much better spot than he has been in the past with this ankle and the way the treatment's gone," said Palmer.

It sounds like the expectation is that Mahomes will be able to move around more against the Eagles than what we saw a couple of weeks ago against Cincinnati. But the ankle is still an issue and it's something that should be monitored by fans in the days leading up to the biggest game of the year.
