NFL players and coaches never know what type of questions they'll get, or who's going to ask them, during Super Bowl Opening Night.
That was the case for Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid, who got a visit from free agent quarterback Jameis Winston. Captured by our friend Marleah Campbell of KCTV5 on X, Winston paid his respect to Reid, while also shooting his shot to play for the future Hall of Famer in the future.
"Coach, I'm honored to grow up during this time to see you coaching in multiple Super Bowls, for my favorite team (Philadelphia Eagles) and now for the Kansas City Chiefs," Winston told Reid. "Man, I hope I can play for you one day. I know it's free agency."
Winston went on to tell Reid that he enjoys watching his famous Punt, Pass, and Kick Competition video clip from Reid's childhood, to which Reid responded by saying he wishes he could throw it as well as Winston does.
While Winston was being his usual entertaining self, there was likely a lot of truth in him saying that he hopes to play for Reid one day. The 31-year-old veteran still has a desire to continue his playing career, and showed in 2024 that he is still a serviceable QB.
Winston threw for 2,121 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in nine games with the Cleveland Browns during the regular season, also adding 83 yards and one TD on the ground. He threw for over 300 yards in two games, and had one game in which he passed for 497 yards.
It will be interesting to see if he can get another crack as a starter, but if not he'll definitely get a backup job. Could that be with the Chiefs? Kansas City will be in need of a No. 2 QB in 2025 as Carson Wentz is slated to hit free agency. In fact, Patrick Mahomes is the only QB who the Chiefs have under contract beyond this season.
Like Mahomes, Winston has a big arm and can make any throw. Winston has passed for over 4,000 yards three times in his career, including once over 5,000. His curse has been interceptions, having thrown 111 of them during his 10-year career. In 2019 Winston threw 30 INTs, the most by a QB since the 1988 season.
It's reasonable to believe that Reid could reign in Winston's turnover issues a bit. Winston recorded a 20-11 touchdown-to-interception ratio when he played for QB guru coach Sean Payton with the New Orleans Saint. Regardless of whether or not the Chiefs would be interested in acquiring Winston, whichever team does will get a player who brings a lot of energy, charisma, and a very positive attitude.
