Kansas City Chiefs and the Detroit Lions were the story of Thursday night until they weren’t.
In some very interesting timing that was surely no accident, the Cincinnati Bengals and quarterback Joe Burrow came to an agreement on a five-year deal that makes him the highest-paid player in the NFL at $55 million a season.
The Chiefs and Bengals have had their battles in recent years in the AFC Playoffs. Last season, it was Kansas City and Patrick Mahomes defeating Joe Burrow and the Bengals before going on to win the Super Bowl.
It’s been noted by multiple sources that the deal was quietly known about during Bengals’ practice today, so it being leaked during the NFL season opener is no coincidence. With a deal of $275 million with $219 million guaranteed, Burrow has stolen the spotlight for the time being.
On an interesting note, Mahomes’ average salary of $45 million now makes him the eighth highest-paid quarterback.
Expect the Bengals and Chiefs to continue fighting it out for years to come. Cincinnati gets a nice little poke in with the news leak to steal the spotlight.
