The Kansas City Chiefs' defense turned in yet another stellar performance in its Week 7 28-18 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was held to just 212 passing yards and was picked off three times. Jordan Mason rushed for only 58 yards as the Chiefs continue to be dominant against running backs, allowing the least amount of yards to the position in the NFL.
One of the keys to the success of the Chiefs' defense is that it is always looking to improve somewhere. The point of emphasis as of late has been making stops on the opposing offense's opening drive. Safety Justin Reid talked about the importance of starting fast to the media after Sunday's game.
"(It's been) huge," Reid said on setting the tone on the first drive. "Every week we talk about the first series. Because, you know, the first three, four weeks of the season, we were giving up points on the first series. So, it has been an extreme emphasis to start fast on the first drive of the game and make sure that we build on top of that as the game goes on. Just be consistent, win in the red zone, win on third down, win on fourth down, because those are critical situations. So, I think the guys have done a phenomenal job buying into that, and we just got to continue to do it."
Not only has Kansas City's defense made stops on the opening drive in each of its last two games, but it didn't allow a score until its opponents fourth drive. That has allowed the Chiefs' offense to get on the scoreboard first, letting the team play with a lead.
The Chiefs have only trailed for just over four minutes throughout the last two weeks thanks in large part to their defense starting fast. As a result, their defense has been able to rack up more sacks and turnovers. Making opening drive stops and playing well in the first quarter overall will make an already great Chiefs defense an even more well-rounded unit.
