Andy Reid uses one of his playmakers as reminder not to get hung up on individual statistics within Chiefs’ offense
Player’s roles go beyond just putting up numbers in Reid’s offense.
The Kansas City Chiefs have been much improved on offense this season.
They weren’t at their best during their 28-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 9, but were humming for multiple weeks before that. The passing game in particular has been efficient. The Chiefs have a deep cast of pass catchers, including Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice, Hollywood Brown, and Travis Kelce.
Even JuJu Smith-Schuster and Tyquan Thornton have made big impacts. When an offense has that many weapons to utilize, not all of them will consistently put up big numbers. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean their roles are lessened or they aren’t making an impact.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid isn’t worried about WR Xavier Worthy’s production
While speaking to the media on Monday, Reid was asked if Worthy needs to be more involved in order for the offense to improve.
“We try to get them all involved the best we can,” Reid responded. “Some games, you’re just going to have that where they’re taking somebody away, and that’s how it goes. It happens as the coverage goes. As the play call goes. We’re not down on Xavier Worthy. We know he’s a good player, and we’d like to get the ball in our good player’s hands the best way we can.”
Just because a player doesn’t touch the ball doesn’t mean he isn’t making a difference. The threat of Worthy being on the field in any capacity helps Kansas City’s offense out tremendously. His stat line of 23 receiving and seven rushing yards against Buffalo isn’t eye-popping, but he did lead all Chiefs WRs with 50 snaps played.
Worthy has caught at least five passes in half of the games he’s played in this season (not counting Week 1 which he left early with an injury). That is solid production considering how much quarterback Patrick Mahomes spreads the ball around. In the three games Worthy played while Rice was suspended, he recorded 17 touches for 198 yards and one touchdown.
The Chiefs are the only team in the NFL that has six players with at least 200 receiving yards. K.C.’s offense is at its best when everybody is contributing and opposing defenses have to account for every weapon. There’s little doubt that Worthy will have big games in the future, but when he doesn’t, remember that he is still making an impact.
