‘Football is my escape’ – Chiefs DT Chris Jones experienced a wave of emotions after attending funeral and playing vs. Ravens
Awesome effort and dedication from Chris Jones this past weekend.
Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones has fought through a wave of emotions over the past few days.
After participating in a team walkthrough on Saturday, Jones jumped on a plane to Mississippi so he could attend a funeral for his Aunt Don. Jones flew back to Kansas City on Sunday, landing around 2:40 p.m. local time. He made it to the stadium in time for the 3:25 kickoff, and played in the game.
Chiefs organization helped Chris Jones navigate a tough weekend
Following the Chiefs’ 37-20 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, Jones revealed that the team helped him be able to pull off attending the funeral and still being able to play in the game.
“[I] left yesterday, came back after the funeral today,” Jones said. “We had it planned out. We had a strategic plan to get here in time for the game.”
“They were very supportive, and very understanding to the scheduling of things,” Jones continued. “The schedule of the the funeral, to where I can still make the game and still be supportive on the family aspect of it. I’m super appreciative for them for understanding.”
Playing alongside his teammates against Ravens helped Jones take his mind off things
Jones was his usual dominant self against Baltimore, recording a tackle for loss, a pass defensed, and two quarterback hits. Since the Chiefs had the game well in hand throughout most of the second half, Jones got to rest a bit — playing a season low 38 snaps. Jones explained that being with his teammates and being able to play in the game helped him cut loose during an otherwise somber time.
“Those are my brothers,” Jones said. “I love being around them. I spend 80 percent of my time with them. We have a long season, usually in there Monday through Friday, most of the time. We spend a lot of time together. They very supportive through this whole process. Early on in the game, it kind of weighed heavy on my shoulders but football is my escape. I can escape from the reality of what’s really going on and just have fun being like a kid in the backyard playing football again.”
