KANSAS CITY – The national media has been trying to create a narrative for several years, now, concerning the Kansas City Chiefs. Let's start here, with the fact that the Chiefs are now mainstream.
What does that mean? Well, Kansas City is now one of the more popular teams in the NFL. They get more primetime games than most teams. The Chiefs get a lot of national exposure.
Non-Chiefs fans hate that, mainly because the Chiefs are now everywhere. The main reason it is like this now is because of Patrick Mahomes. Before he was here, the Chiefs were not as marketable. A Super Bowl win helps, too.
Now, with the Chiefs having the superstar they do at quarterback brings something that has happened for 20 years now. The national media has been trying to make a new rival for Tom Brady, and they have one, according to NBC Sports' Chris Simms.
According to national media, Mahomes-Brady rivalry is real
The national media is certain that the Mahomes-Brady rivalry is a thing, as it should be. The two have played each other every year Mahomes has been in the NFL, whether that be regular season or playoffs.
Mahomes should want to play Brady, just like we know Brady wants Mahomes because he wants the best competition. Every time these two get together, fireworks go off. This year, Week 4 will feature the Chiefs and Buccaneers on Sunday Night Football.
While it will feel good to beat Brady this year, it won't quite make the Chiefs even with him. He has taken big moments from the Chiefs a few times over the last few years. But, the Chiefs have gotten the best of Brady at times, as well, evidenced by Brady's slight 3-2 lead over the course of five meetings. And, outside of the Chiefs' defeat in Super Bowl LV, every game has been close, finishing with a one-score winning margin.
That's the exact definition of a rivalry: back-and-forth, close games where one team doesn't hold a big advantage over the other. And the fact that this could be the last time these two play each other turns up the temperature even more.
