Fans were disappointed when the Kansas City Chiefs didn’t make any deals ahead of last Tuesday’s trade deadline.

The Chiefs were in the market for a running back and pass rusher. They offered a fourth-round draft pick to the New York Jets to acquire RB Breece Hall, but weren’t willing to meet the Jet’s demand for a third-rounder. On Sunday morning ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Kansas City was very close to making another deal, but it fell apart at the last minute.

Chiefs nearly acquired OLB linebacker Boye Mafe in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks

It is unknown what the Chiefs offered Seattle for Mafe, but it didn’t end up happening despite the two sides getting very close to completing the transaction.

It makes sense that the Seahawks would want to hang on to Mafe, as they are tied for the best record in the NFC at 6-2. Seattle has a real shot at winning the NFC West this season and making a deep postseason run.

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, they missed out yet again on acquiring a player who could have helped out tremendously. Mafe recorded nine sacks in 2023, and six in 2024. He has become a rotational player more than a starter since Mike Macdonald took over as coach last year.

Mafe has yet to record a sack in 2025, recording 13 total tackles, nine quarterback pressures, and two passes defensed thus far. A change of scenery could have benefitted him, and any addition to K.C.’s pass rush would be a plus. Mafe is a bit smaller than what defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo likes in a defensive end at 6-foot-4 and 260 pounds, but Mafe would have brought some much needed speed.

If the Chiefs are going to make another Super Bowl run, they’ll have to make the most out of what they have. Their pass rush is struggling mightily minus DE George Karlaftis, but Spagnuolo is doing a great job as usual of dialing up creative blitzes to mask the issues they have. K.C. ranks 18th in the NFL in sacks with 20.
