Chiefs’ offense has been aggressive in one key area this season that culminated in a breakout performance vs. Ravens
Kansas City’s offense will be hard to stop if it keeps this up.
The Kansas City Chiefs had a breakout performance on offense against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 4.
Scoring on seven of their first eight possessions, the Chiefs put up 37 points and 382 total yards of offense. Part of the reason for their offensive success can be attributed the aggressiveness they played with, which they’ve actually done all season.
Chiefs’ offense is being aggressive on fourth down, and it’s paying off
Only one team in the NFL (the Carolina Panthers, 11) has gone for it on fourth down more than Kansas City (10) this season. The Chiefs have converted on nine of those attempts, which in the most in the league. While speaking to the media on Monday, coach Andy Reid detailed the team’s thought process on when to keep the offense on the field for fourth down.
“We try to stay aggressive in that area, and try to be relatively smart with it, the best we can,” Reid said. “Judgment, obviously, is a part of that. Nags (offensive coordinator Matt Nagy) spends a ton of time on that with (offensive line coach) Andy Heck.
“They go over and crank that stuff out. And (tight ends coach) Tom Melvin’s involved with that too, and Corey (assistant offensive line coach Corey Matthaei). They get in there, and they kind of grind on what they see in the pass game and the run game. We’ve been able to do both and be successful on both, which has helped.
“Then it’s just a matter of where we’re at in the situation of the game. You’ve got to take that into consideration when you’re doing it, but we try to stay aggressive. Pat’s (quarterback Patrick Mahomes) got a good feel on that too. We’ve got a lot of trust in him. Some of these things we’re doing, he’s got options on, and he’s got to be spot on when we’re doing them.”
The Chiefs went 4-4 on fourth down attempts against Baltimore on Sunday, including cashing in for a touchdown on a fourth-and-one play during the fourth quarter. While it’s great to see them be confident and aggressive going for it on fourth down, they can help themselves by improving on third down so they don’t have to constantly be in that situation.
Kansas City ranks 15th in the NFL in third down conversion percentage at 39.3 percent, and were just 5-15 against the Ravens. The Chiefs have typically been one of the best third down offenses in the league during Mahomes’ tenure, so there’s reason to believe they will improve. The returns of wide receivers Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice should help tremendously.
