The Deebo Samuel-San Francisco 49ers saga reached the ultimate heights Wednesday when news of his trade request became public. There are multiple reasons why Samuel wants out, apparently, but there's still a long way to go when it comes to a final resolution.
Based off recent reports, it sounds like Samuel simply doesn't want to be in San Francisco and it sounds like he doesn't like the way he was being used. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport has the mindset that Samuel wouldn't stay even if the 49ers offered him $30 million per year.
"Sources say Deebo Samuel actually put in a trade request to the 49ers two weeks ago," Rapoport said Thursday morning on Good Morning Football. "And it was not about money. From what I understand, the team wanted to engage in long-term extension talks with Samuel and make him one of the highest-paid receivers in the NFL. It's actually about different issues [and] one of those big issues is usage. …It seems like there are some questions from Samuel's standpoint about how sustainable is that. I don't even think, at this point, if the 49ers offered him $30 million per year, he'd take it."
This could be a power play by Samuel. It could also be the truth. But either way, this news has teams around the league paying very, very close attention to the situation.
Some teams are even lining up to try and get a deal done. Per Rapoport, the Chiefs are one of those teams.
"So he [Samuel] would like to be traded. No doubt several teams are lining up to do a big-time deal for him," Rapoport said. "Among those teams: the Jets, the Packers, the Chiefs, the Lions, and of course, several others. We do not know yet how willing the 49ers are to consider these offers but we do know if someone is going to trade for Samuel, it's going to be extremely expensive."
If money truly isn't an issue and Samuel is fine with getting paid less than the reported $30 million per year that he desires, then the Chiefs could totally pull this off. They have enough cap space and they have plenty of draft picks. The Chiefs couldn't afford to pay Tyreek Hill that much, so it won't make any sense if they turn around and hand Samuel $30 million per year. However, it sounds like $30 million per year is no longer a requirement for Samuel, which changes things, obviously.
It just all depends on San Francisco's asking price and how much Samuel really wants, at the end of the day.
Stay tuned.
