The Kansas City Chiefs notched their first win of the 2023 NFL preseason against the Arizona Cardinals with a 38-10 victory on Saturday night. This game gave fans an extended look at the starters and another look at the entire 90-man offseason roster.
It's difficult to learn much from preseason snaps due to the sheer number of players working throughout the game. This week, in particular, is one of the most difficult of the preseason to extract information from snap counts.
Here’s a look at how the snaps came down in preseason Week 2 followed by some takeaways:

Keondre Coburn and the defensive tackle conundrum
The Chiefs are clearly working through their options at the three-technique position. Chris Jones' holdout continues and Tershawn Wharton is still dealing with his knee injury after coming off of the active/PUP list. The player with the first shot in preseason Week 1 was Daniel Wise, but he failed to impress.
In preseason Week 2, Matt Dickerson got the first opportunity to play in Jones' spot. On the ensuing defensive drive, the Chiefs put Keondre Coburn in with the first-team defense beside Derrick Nnadi. He managed some push, even flushing out Cardinals QB Colt McCoy on his fourth snap of the game. The team clearly wants to see what other players can do at this position, and it's safe bet to say that it's perhaps the most unsettled position on the 90-man offseason roster.
Deneric Prince falling out of favor
As I wrote earlier this week, Chiefs rookie RB Deneric Prince has seemingly fallen down the depth chart in more ways than one. La'Mical Perine played ahead of Prince on Saturday. Perine had 16 snaps compared to Prince's 13 snaps and by practically all accounts had a better game. Both got six carries, but Prince averaged 3 yards per clip. Perine averaged over double the yards per carry. Really, the only spot that Prince outperformed Perine was his two-yard rushing score. Perine didn't get into the end zone vs. the Cardinals.
Not only did Prince see his role on offense relegated, but he also took a back seat on special teams as well. After being one of the team's leaders in special teams snaps a week ago, he only played three snaps for Dave Toub during Saturday's win in Arizona. Richie James took first-team kick return duties along with first-team punt return duties. After the game, Andy Reid mentioned James' experience as a key factor there. Perhaps they're remembering what happened with Skyy Moore a season ago.
Charles Omenihu playing a ton
Omenihu played 21 defensive snaps on Sunday, working with both the first-team defense and second-team defense. I think we're probably going to see more of Omenihu in preseason Week 3 as well, even though the starters don't typically play during that game.
Why is he playing so much in preseason Week 2? Well, I think Andy Reid and Steve Spagnuolo are trying to get him as many repetitions as possible. He's going to be on ice for six weeks to start the regular season due to his suspension. While he can use team workout facilities and attend meetings, he won't be able to practice or play while he's serving his suspension. That's a lot of time to miss, so it makes sense to get him some extra work while they still can.
