The Kansas City Chiefs are currently resting up on their bye week.

The team is sitting at a 5-4 record, which is disappointing, but they’re far from out of it. Players and coaches alike are certainly using the bye to brush up on things, both mentally and physically. However, they also need to rejuvenate and cut loose a bit before getting back to the grind, which is what quarterback Patrick Mahomes is doing this weekend.

Patrick Mahomes to appear on ESPN College GameDay on Saturday

Mahomes will be joining host Pat McAfee and the rest of the College GameDay crew on Saturday to pick games. They will be live from Lubbock, Texas — home of the Texas Tech Red Raiders — where Mahomes played his collegiate ball.

No. 9 Texas Tech will be hosting the No. 8 BYU Cougars in College GameDay’s Game of the Week. This is a huge matchup for both teams, but a little bit more for Texas Tech, which currently sits at 8-1. BYU is a perfect 8-0 on the season.

Interestingly enough, Chiefs coach Andy Reid played offensive tackle at BYU, and later served as a graduate assistant coach. Mahomes and Reid have surely had some friendly banter about Saturday’s matchup between their two alma maters.

Mahomes attended Texas Tech between 2014-2016. He put up huge numbers in 29 career starts for the Red Raiders, recording 11,252 yards and 93 touchdowns passing, and also adding 820 yards and 22 TDs rushing. In 2016 he was named Second-Teams All-Big 12, and won the Sammy Baugh Trophy (the nation’s top passer).

That was also the year Mahomes put up an unbelievable performance against the Baker Mayfield-led Oklahoma Sooners, as Mahomes tied the NCAA record for the most passing yards in a single game with 734. He also threw for five TDs and rushed for two more. All of his collegiate success led to him to being selected No. 10 overall in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Chiefs, changing the course of the franchise forever.
