Just five days ago, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes wowed fans by unleashing his behind-the-back pass during team drills at training camp.
He's been honing this particular piece of "Mahomes Magic" for years, mostly working on it after practice at training camp or during warm-ups. Fans have wondered if they'll ever actually see him attempt this type of pass during a game. We've seen him emboldened to make the no-look passes, sidearm throws, underhand tosses, and even an occasional left-handed pass. It only stands to reason that a behind-the-back pass is on the way.
Should Mahomes attempt this type of pass during a game, we now know that at least one receiver is ready for it. The recipient of his behind-the-back pass on Saturday was Chiefs second-year WR Skyy Moore. The 22-year-old spoke to media members on Wednesday and was asked whether it was difficult to catch that pass compared to a regular one.
"It's really not that hard," Moore explained. "I don't really see (the ball) come out. I see it a little bit, but like it's the same to me. (The ball) is still spinning. I've still got to catch it. It ain't that much different, though."
At the end of the day, Moore knows his job is to catch the ball no matter how it's released by the quarterback. He also trusts Mahomes to get the ball to him by any means necessary.
"If he's going to throw it, I'm going to catch it," Moore said of the behind-the-back pass.
Aided by his 10.25-inch hands, Moore is aiming to catch plenty of passes for the Chiefs in 2023, whether it's a behind-the-back pass or otherwise.
