The Kansas City Chiefs let one get away to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday night.

Despite outpacing Jacksonville in passing yards, rushing yards, first downs, and time of possession, the Chiefs lost 31-28. That can attributed to committing a whopping 13 penalties for 109 yards, as well as a pick-six thrown by quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

It is next to impossible to win while making that many mistakes. The Chiefs will look back on this game as a wasted opportunity to get a win, especially with one position group in particular that turned in an awesome performance.

Chiefs squandered best outing by their offensive line of the season

When Kansas City’s offense wasn’t shooting itself in the foot, it moved the ball up and down the field with relative ease all night. The Chiefs racked up 476 yards of total offense, and went 4-4 on cashing in for touchdowns in the redzone.

A large portion of their success can be credited to the offensive line, which led the way for a season-high 158 rushing yards. It also did not allow a single sack on Mahomes, which led to him throwing for a season-best 318 yards.

While speaking to the media after the game, Mahomes praised his offensive line for giving him so much time to throw.

“I thought the offensive line did a great job,” Mahomes said. “When they’re playing like that it’s easy for me to survey the field, and I’ll send guys over second, third, [or] fourth reads in the progression. If they keep doing that, we’ll keep putting up points.”

Mahomes went on to describe how the offensive line has opened things up for the offense by playing so well.

“You see the the play-actions and the bootlegs that we were able to run,” Mahomes continued. “That comes off the run game, and that comes with the chemistry that O-line is building with the running backs. as well. That stuff that will continue to get better and better over time, and we’ll continue to work off that and try to find ways to make the offense even better.”

You can look at Monday night’s game as squandered, but also as a silver lining. The Chiefs’ offense has put together good back-to-back performances, and penalties are something that can be corrected. It is very encouraging to see the offensive line coming together after how much K.C. has invested in it, and the struggles it went through last season.
