The Kansas City Chiefs' plans at the left tackle position this offseason haven't always been clear.

They first signed Jaguars OT Jawaan Taylor, with every intention of having him switch from right tackle to left tackle. Then they draft Wanya Morris in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft. In the days following the draft, they added veteran LT Donovan Smith on a one-year deal

All of the mixed signals surrounding their plans at the tackle position have left fans weary now that Smith is the likely starter. It also doesn't help that Smith is coming off one of the worst seasons of his decade-long NFL career.

Chiefs RG Trey Smith put some minds at ease following practice on Wednesday, showering his new teammate with effusive praise.

“Donovan (Smith) is awesome man," Chiefs RG Trey Smith told reporters. "Talk about a veteran player a guy that you can look up to get advice from and really just the wisdom that he has from playing that long being in a position at left tackle. How well he’s done as well, so it’s been a great addition to the offensive line especially for the young tackles, too. A great addition just really for all of us just to learn from and listen to. It’s really great having him on.”

Smith isn't just holding down the fort on Patrick Mahomes' blindside, but he's quickly become a resource for all of his teammates on the offensive line. It doesn't matter if it's a tenured starter or a wide-eyed rookie like Wanya Morris, Smith is imparting some veteran knowledge that's sure to help the team well beyond his one-year deal with Kansas City.
