The next roster cut-down date is Tuesday, August 23rd, when the roster must be cut down to 80 players. Next Tuesday, August 30th, the Kansas City Chiefs must cut their roster down to 53 players, which is where it really starts to get hard.

There are a lot of young guys and a lot of veterans that will get cut in the process. That’s just how this business goes. The veterans know how to handle situations like that, at least most of them do. The young guys, well, they usually don’t know how to.

Knowing that that may be around the corner can affect your play in the last preseason game. Chiefs veteran and new safety Justin Reid gave some advice to the guys who may be on the bubble.

Chiefs’ Reid shows excellent leadership

The Chiefs will play the Green Bay Packers on Thursday in their last preseason game of the season. There will be a lot of guys going out there trying one last time to prove they belong. It can be hard to play with that on your mind. Reid gave advice to those guys on Monday.

”Don't get bogged down thinking about what's going to happen next,” Reid told the media on Monday. “Football is football. It's the same sport you've been playing since you were a kid."

There was a problem when Tyrann Mathieu left the Chiefs this last offseason. The first thoughts from a lot of people were who would be the emotional leader on the defensive side of the ball. We didn’t quite know who it would be but had some guesses.

Reid has been that guy so far.

The new Chiefs safety won’t yell and sound as passionate as Mathieu was, but that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t care, or that he isn’t leading. This quote by him shows his leadership and shows the Chiefs have a guy on defense that will lead.

Reid has stepped up and taken on that role. That’s something that wears going to be hard for a new guy to do, let alone a guy who is joining a more successful team than any he had previously been on.

This is the type of stuff you want to see out of your leaders.

As for the guys who are on the bubble, this is great advice. Only thinking about what will happen next will make things worse. It will make the players get in their own heads.

The Chiefs will need everyone in the right headspace as they gear up for the season. Yes, it’s preseason, but after this, it’s nothing but the real deal.
