Pass rusher that may get cut could be good fit for Chiefs
If it was easy, the Kansas City Chiefs would have a good pass rush by now, but they don’t. As a matter of fact, they finished with the fourth-lowest sack total (31) despite blitzing at the eight-highest rate in 2021 . Other than Chris Jones, who is one of the best in the league, what positives […]
If it was easy, the Kansas City Chiefs would have a good pass rush by now, but they don’t. As a matter of fact, they finished with the fourth-lowest sack total (31) despite blitzing at the eight-highest rate in 2021 .
Other than Chris Jones, who is one of the best in the league, what positives are there in that area of the defense? Well, now they have first-rounder George Karlaftis, who could be huge for this team, or he could be a bust. We don’t really know just yet.
The Chiefs need more help when it comes to getting after the quarterback. With roster cuts coming soon, there is a player that could potentially be cut, and he could help the Chiefs in that very department.
Chiefs could sign former first-round pick if he's cut
According to ESPN, Jacksonville Jaguars pass rusher and former first-round pick K’Lavon Chaisson could potentially get cut.
He'd be a good fit for Kansas City if that were to happen.
Right off the bat, some of you may think that signing a player who was cut is a bad idea. Why should the Chiefs get him if he wasn’t good enough for his former team in the first place? Well, I’m glad you asked.
The Chiefs aren’t looking for a guy who can start or steal someone’s job. If they are, they likely won’t find that guy as a cut free agent. However, they are looking to build depth. Pass rush depth to be exact.
Chaisson is a former top-10 pick, so he has the traits to succeed in the NFL. At the same time, he hasn't produced, which could be the catalyst behind his release. There's also the fact the Jaguars drafted Travon Walker from Georgia with the number one pick this year; he could very well take Chaisson's role.
As for production, Chaisson has had just two sacks in his 31 games with the Jaguars. No, that isn’t good, but the snaps haven’t really been there.
Chaisson finished last year with just 384 defensive snaps throughout 15 games. He averaged 25.6 snaps a game, which isn’t much, at all. He's yet to play more than 51% of snaps in any season during his career, so far.
Per Pro Football Focus, of 64 EDGE players with at least 384 snaps last year, Chaisson ranked 40th in tackles (24), and 60th in run stops (16), which was just one less than Frank Clark had last year in less than half the snaps.
Chaisson won’t come in and take anyone's job, as he doesn’t have that amount of skill, yet. But, with the right development team, as the Chiefs have, he could easily get better. Being on a bad franchise like the Jaguars can hurt a player's career, and he is still so young.
Chaisson can come in and add depth to an area that needs as much help as it can get next year. Not to mention, the Chiefs could get him for extremely cheap.
