Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt is earning recognition from the NFL that he hasn’t seen in a long time.

Hunt was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in Week 12 against the Indianapolis Colts. This marks Hunt’s second Offensive Player of the Week award and his first time earning the award since Week 9 of the 2018 NFL season in Kansas City. According to the NFL’s press release, Hunt is now the fifth Chiefs running back to earn the honor multiple times, joining Priest Holmes (four-time winner), Larry Johnson (four), Jamaal Charles (three), and Pro Football Hall of Famer Marcus Allen (two).

Hunt joins QB Patrick Mahomes (Week 4 and Week 6) as the only other Chiefs player to win an AFC Offensive Player of the Week award this season. Hunt’s teammate, WR Rashee Rice, likely gave him some competition this week with 141 receiving yards against Indy. However, it was Hunt who took home the prize.

Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt had an “over my dead body” game in Week 12 vs. the Colts

To use a moniker coined by the late great Terez Paylor, Week 12’s 23-20 overtime win against the Colts was an “over my dead body” game from Hunt. We should know as much with Chiefs HC Andy Reid having to remind us that Hunt was “upright” after the Week 12 win. Hunt very much helped will his team to victory with a season-high 130 scrimmage yards (104 rushing on 30 carries, 26 receiving on three targets and three receptions) and a rushing touchdown. Hunt was the only player in the AFC with at least 100 rushing yards and 25 receiving yards in Week 12.

Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt’s Week 12 vs. Colts quick stats and facts

  • Most offensive snaps in his 9-year NFL career (68)
  • Most rushing attempts in his 9-year NFL career (30)
  • First 100-yard rushing game since Week 9 of the 2024 NFL season

Ironically, Hunt fumbled for just the second time in his career in Week 12, but that moment prompted even more tough running from the 30-year-old running back. His teammates, including Travis Kelce, kept his spirits high in the moment.

“They just told me to keep my head up, man, we’re going to get it back,” Hunt said on Tuesday. “We’re going to give it back to you so just make the most of it, so I had to just think positive and when I got the ball, I was going to run pissed off.”

Whether it’s the passing game or the running game, Hunt says he’s always looking for ways to make a play and help his team win.

“Whenever my number is called, I just try to make the play,” Hunt said. “So, if that’s throwing me the ball (or) handing it (off), every opportunity I get, I try to make the most of it.”
