Since Patrick Mahomes became the quarterback, the Kansas City Chiefs have lacked an elite, dynamic running back. This offseason could change that, whether it’s drafting Jeremiyah Love at No. 9 or signing a free-agent running back.

There are a few options the Chiefs can pursue this offseason. Notably, their actions in free agency, which will unfold soon, will influence their draft decisions. For example, if KC secures an elite running back in free agency, they could shift focus to an elite edge rusher in the draft. Fortunately for the Chiefs, this scenario is now more plausible.

The Chiefs have a better opportunity to get Seahawks RB Kenneth Walker now

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Seahawks are unlikely to use their franchise tag on running back and Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker. The team faces decisions on multiple free agents they hope to re-sign and aims to extend WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba. The additional costs related to their Super Bowl run also make using the franchise tag this offseason unlikely.

Their Super Bowl MVP could pair up with another Super Bowl MVP in Mahomes. But of course, it’s not that easy. The Chiefs have some moves they have to make this offseason, and a lot of them. The Chiefs have the least cap space available at -$57 million as things currently stand. There are a few ways they can go about it, and the most popular seems to be restructuring Mahomes’ contract.

A full Mahomes restructure would free up $44 million, still leaving the Chiefs $10 million over the cap. Further moves, such as trading Trent McDuffie or cutting players like Jawaan Taylor, Mike Danna, Drue Tranquill, Noah Gray, or Jaylon Moore, may also be considered.

Getting Walker would completely turn the offense around. They have the receivers to have an elite offense, with some things needing to be fixed there as well. But adding a running game, which they haven’t had under previous offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, would help everything else out. Walker can be one of the best backs in the league when healthy.
