Washington Commanders just made sure the Chiefs can’t reunite with two players in free agency who helped them win Super Bowls in the past
The Chiefs will still be active in free agency.
The Kansas City Chiefs occasionally bring back coaches and players who helped them during the dynasty. Now, there are two players they can’t do that for; they likely would have liked to bring back for depth, maybe even starting positions.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, the Washington Commanders and former veteran Chiefs OL Nick Allegretti have agreed to a new two-year deal. Allegretti is a three-time Super Bowl winner with the Chiefs. He started the last two games for Washington at center last season in place of injured Tyler Biadasz, who is being released. Allegretti stepped up big time for the Chiefs over the years when starters went down with injuries.
Now, he’s getting the big-time money he deserves. The Commanders have also signed former Chiefs offensive lineman Andrew Wylie, bringing two former Super Bowl winners from the Chiefs onto their team. Signing them has prevented the Chiefs from going after them in free agency when it opens on Wednesday, March 11.
The Chiefs will look elsewhere for offensive line additions
The Chiefs have informed right tackle Jawaan Taylor that they will release him if they can’t find a trade for him before the start of the new league year on March 11. So, either way, they will be without their starting right tackle and be in the market for another tackle, whether that’s a starter or a depth guy.
The Chiefs have six draft picks and can trade back for more if they feel the need. They will also have enough money after all the players they plan to cut have been cut and the contracts they want to restructure have been restructured. They will find their offensive line one way or another.
And, it’s not like the Chiefs need to go all in on the offensive line. They have put enough into it, whether it’s Creed Humphrey as the highest-paid center in the league, Trey Smith as the highest-paid guard, Josh Simmons, a former first-round pick, or Kingsley Suamataia, a former second-round pick.
Not to mention, Mahomes and company have won with much less than what they have right now on the offensive line.
