The Kansas City Chiefs began their current dynasty with their 2018 AFC Championship Game victory. This was an epic contest that, had Dee Ford not been offside and the phantom roughing the passer call not been made, likely would have sent them to the Super Bowl—and possibly meant four rings for Patrick Mahomes by now. After this near-miss, head coach Andy Reid and his squad made key changes to ensure they would not only return but win both the AFC Championship and the Super Bowl.

One of those changes was bringing in future Hall of Famer Terrell Suggs as a pass rusher. The defense had struggled at this under Bob Sutton in 2018. Suggs didn’t have much left in the tank. He was going to retire if he couldn’t go to a Super Bowl contender. The Chiefs saw a perfect fit for him. How they got him is the crazy part.

How the Chiefs got Terrell Suggs

“Andy Reid called me,” Suggs told Marshawn Lynch and Mike Robinson on this week’s edition of the Get Got Podcast. “He didn’t even call my agent. I don’t even know how he got my (expletive) number to this day. Yeah, I hung up the phone, and Patrick Mahomes called me. He was the show then, you know what I’m saying? Yeah, he was the show. And he was like, ‘Sizzle, come get the Super Bowl ring.’ I said, ‘OK, I’ll be there in the morning.’”

Suggs may not be recognized as an all-time Chiefs great, and he may not recognize Kansas City as his team, and vice versa, but he was instrumental in that Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers.

Suggs didn’t do anything crazy, but what he did do completely matters. He played 57% of the defensive snaps in the Super Bowl, which allowed guys like Frank Clark, Emmanuel Ogbah, and Alex Okafor to stay fresh throughout the game. He finished with two tackles and a quarterback hit. Suggs is a legend, and Mahomes and Reid knew that. They had to go get him.
