The Kansas City Chiefs sparked controversy by rehiring Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator rather than retaining Matt Nagy, leaving many fans disappointed after hoping for a fresh direction.

However, former and current players seem to be over the moon bout this hire. Bieniemy not only won two Super Bowls with the Chiefs, but he was also the OC when the offense was at its best, as it has since fallen off drastically since his departure and Nagy’s hiring as OC. And, he held everyone accountable—that’s one of the biggest things this hire is about, and former wide receiver Gehrig Dieter pointed that out recently.

“Everyone who plays football should love the way EB coaches. Treats everyone the same, coaches everyone the same,” Dieter wrote on Twitter when asked if he likes EB’s coaching style and if it’s what the Chiefs need.

Dieter spent much of his career with the Chiefs as a practice squad player. Still, he felt like the stars—Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Chris Jones—were coached the same way by Bieniemy as the practice squad players. Coaches often claim fairness, but it’s rare in practice; that’s called accountability, and it’s what they desperately need.

In his end-of-season presser, Patrick Mahomes called for accountability

“I just want someone that loves football, that cares about football, that wants to do everything they can to win, to hold people accountable and to bring new ideas every single day,” Mahomes told reporters days after the season officially ended.

Mahomes’s desire for accountability is clear—he wants a coach like EB who treats everyone equally. As one of the league’s fiercest competitors, Mahomes believes this is the path to success.

Now, the Chiefs hope Bieniemy will also bring new ideas from his stints with the Washington Commanders and Chicago Bears. With both past and present players advocating for him, the organization feels confident Bieniemy is the right fit.
