There aren’t many times in NFL history when a player has displayed the killer mentality to will his team to victory, as Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes have. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is that rare competitor. Fortunately, this small-market Missouri team landed Mahomes, who’s taken them to five Super Bowls by age 30, winning three.

Despite his accolades, in a game where the Chiefs were essentially out of the postseason, Mahomes wanted to return with his torn ACL and LCL and finish the game. If that doesn’t show how unique he is, I don’t know what does.

“Obviously, I knew something had happened, but once I was able to walk a little bit, I thought I might have a chance to get back into the game,” Mahomes told reporters via Zoom on Thursday. “You kind of go into the tent, they do the test, and they wanted to take me back into the locker room. You don’t know for sure or anything like that, but when I was able to move, I asked one of the doctors if I could get a brace and just finish the game, but they wouldn’t let me.”

Mahomes is going through something he’s never been through

This is new for Mahomes. He’s never had a major injury like this. The closest was a dislocated knee against the Broncos early in his career. Even then, he played a few games later.

“Obviously, it kind of sunk in once the game ended, and then I was able to get the results from the MRI and stuff like that, which is hard, but at the same time, you have to flip the script fast, knowing that it’s going to be a quick turnaround to get to this season,” Mahomes said. “Now it’s just been motivating, trying to push myself, like I said, as much as they’ll let me push myself to be ready for next year.”

We all know that Mahomes is a monster. He said himself that the doctors and trainers have already had to stop him a few times from doing too much, so he doesn’t overdo anything. That’s just the type of competitor he is.

Mahomes and the team seem to be targeting a Week 1 recovery. As he said on Thursday, that timeline seems possible, but the recovery process remains uncertain. If all goes well, he’ll want to be out there.
