The Kansas City Chiefs’ run game needs to be addressed, and neither Isiah Pacheco nor Kareem Hunt appears to be the long-term solution. To fix this, the Chiefs must look to free agency or the draft for a new running back—or consider both.

One 2026 free agent, for now, seeks what the Chiefs offer. New York Jets running back Breece Hall wants to play in the Super Bowl. The Chiefs have played in five since 2019, so KC could offer that chance.

Chiefs can help former Jets RB Breece Hall

“Hope I get to experience football on this stage. Everything on the line. I’ll get there one day. I know it,” Hall tweeted out during the Super Bowl that saw the Seattle Seahawks beat the New England Patriots with an elite run game from Kenneth Walker.

Rumors and reports during the last trade deadline suggested Hall was available for trade from the Jets due to his expiring deal. That means the Chiefs may finally have a chance to get Patrick Mahomes the dynamic running back he’s always wanted but never had.

There are things that could hold the Chiefs up. Hall could get franchise tagged. Spotrac lists the 24-year-old running back as a top-tag candidate at $14 million per year, a large sum for a running back. That would make Hall the fourth-highest paid RB behind Saquon Barkley, Christian McCaffrey, and Derrick Henry.

Projected Tag: $14,186,000: Hall is considered the most attractive running back set to become available this March, coming off a career-high 1,065 rush yards in 2025. Combine that with a season where he caught 76 passes (2023) and a significant drop in fumbles this past year, and it’s understandable why there might be more than just a few teams vying for his services. He projects toward a 4-year, $42M deal in our system.” – Spotrac.com

The other issue is that if the Jets don’t tag him, who’s to say the Chiefs are willing to pay a running back $14 million a year, if not more? They have -$47 million in cap space available at the moment. That can change with some roster moves and contract restructures. However, that’s a hefty chunk of change for a team that’s going to be dancing around the cap. That’s not to say they can’t make it happen, though, because general manager Brett Veach could find a way.

With how this 2026 NFL Draft class is, if the Chiefs can’t get Jeremiyah Love, they may as well sign a running back. Then again, Veach and his staff have been great at finding late-round guys who can contribute. There are other guys at the position that the Chiefs can sign, like Javontae Williams, Travis Etienne, Rico Dowdle, Austin Ekeler, and Rachaad White.

Either way, the Chiefs have to do something about the run game.
