Kansas City Chiefs starting playmaker hangs on to NFL Combine record after a few close calls
The Chiefs still have the fastest player in the league.
On Saturday, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy kept his all-time record of the fastest 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, ever. While there were a few close calls, the record stays with Worthy in KC.
Chiefs WR keeps his NFL Combine record that made history, but it got close
Worthy, in electrifying fashion, broke the 40-yard dash record once held by WR John Ross in 2017 at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, blazing down the track in a jaw-dropping 4.21 seconds. This record-smashing run officially crowned the No. 28 overall pick as the fastest player ever measured at the event.
He was so fast that the Pro Football Hall of Fame quickly commemorated his historic moment, showcasing things from the unforgettable sprint in Canton, Ohio. Adding to the thrill, Worthy’s burnt orange University of Texas track shoes and his combine jersey now stand on display—symbols of his lightning-fast achievement.
Reflecting on his mindset leading into the event, Worthy said, “I definitely knew I had a chance. I didn’t know it was going to happen in reality,” he said in an interview. “I came in knowing I was going to run nothing slower than 4.25.”
Fueled by confidence, Worthy’s first blistering attempt clocked in at 4.25 seconds. Eager to shatter expectations, he charged into his second 40-yard dash, convinced he could push his time even lower.
As he explained, “When I was training, I always ran faster on my second 40,” Worthy said, highlighting why he believed a second attempt would be even better.
During this Combine, you could make the case that a few guys got close to Worthy. Now, in all honesty, .5 tenths of a second is not as close as you would think when it comes to a 40-yard dash. However, the way some of these guys were moving, it looked like maybe a few of them could get even closer to that record had they had a few more tries.
Former Oklahoma Sooners and Mississippi State Bulldogs WR Brenen Thompson finished with a 4.26. Ohio State Buckeyes CB Lorenzo Styles finished with a 4.27, and LSU Tigers WR Zavion Thomas finished with a 4.28. All of these guys were blazing fast on Saturday. But there’s only one fastest man in the NFL, and the Chiefs still have him.
