The Kansas City Chiefs' priority No. 1 when the free agency buzzer dings at the start of the NFL's legal tampering period on Monday: Find a starting left tackle to protect Patrick Mahomes' blind side.
Unfortunately, Rams' Alaric Jackson and Ravens' Ronnie Stanley never made it to the market, but Kansas City still has a massive need to fill. Their latest reported interest is slightly worrisome, but hopefully, Chiefs GM Brett Vech has an ace up his sleeve.
Here's all the latest info on the Chiefs' reported left tackle interests. . .
49ers LT Jaylon Moore or Steelers LT Dan Moore Jr.
Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer believes these are the Chiefs' next two targets after they missed out on Ravens LT Ronnie Stanley.
The Chiefs were poised to make a run at Ronnie Stanley before he re-signed with the Ravens, and likely would’ve landed in the range that Baltimore did (three years, $60 million, with $44 million fully guaranteed). So now they’ll take some of that money, and try to sign either 49ers OT Jaylon Moore or Steelers OT Dan Moore Jr.—I think it’s less likely they go get Minnesota’s Cam Robinson. And I think there’s a good chance that the three-time reigning AFC champions land one of the Moores by midday Monday.
In my humble opinion, this would be one of the worst-case scenarios for Kansas City, no matter which Moore they get. Both players have recently been projected to receive contracts averaging between $15M to $20M per year.
Jaylon is at least mildly intriguing because he flashed some ability in relief for Trent Williams last year. You could pair him with his former college teammate at Western Michigan in Mike Caliendo. However, his measurements (6-foot-4, 311 pounds, 33.675-inch arms) have him best suited for an interior position in Kansas City.
The Steelers got a lot out of Dan as a former fourth-round draft pick, but they're also not lining up to re-sign him. They replaced him at the first chance they got, and that's no coincidence. Last season, he led the NFL in sacks allowed with 12 across the regular season and postseason. He meets the Chiefs' arm-length thresholds and is an inch taller than Jaylon. He will likely outperform his tenure in Pittsburgh, but is he the type of guy who could end the revolving door at left tackle?
Jets RT Morgan Moses
The Athletic's Dianna Russini reports that the Chiefs will be among four teams interested in Moses.
While Moses is a career right tackle, he's played left tackle a few times during his NFL career. The vast majority of his left tackle snaps came as a rookie with Washington in 2014. But he started two games at left tackle with the Commanders in 2020 (then-Washington Football Team). Guess who was his quarterback for those games? None other than former Chiefs starting QB Alex Smith. He didn't perform all that bad, either. Moses allowed five total pressures and one sack, but honestly, the sack wasn't entirely his fault. It felt more like a coverage sack on an immobile Smith after he returned from a leg injury.
I don't know if Moses is a realistic option for Kansas City to switch to left tackle at the ripe old age of 34, but it's at least mildly interesting that there's been reported interest.
