Kansas City Chiefs miss former offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy in more ways than one
The Chiefs desperately miss what Eric Bieniemy used to bring, rather than what Matt Nagy has brought.
2025 has been filled with a lot of disappointments when it comes to the Kansas City Chiefs. Obviously, the 6-7 season in itself is enough to be upset about. However, the biggest surprise and disappointment has to be how bad the offense is, because the offensive line has done well, and all of the weapons are healthy and available. OC Matt Nagy seems to be the guy catching most of the hate there.
It’s not Nagy’s fault, or most of it isn’t anyway. However, the Chiefs really miss what former offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy brought. Bieniemy is currently the Chicago Bears RB coach after being the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator in 2023. With what he’s currently doing with the Bears, the Chiefs could really use him on the sideline right now.
Bieniemy has turned the Bears around, while the Chiefs stink on offense and in the run game
There really is no run game from the Chiefs. Sure, there have been a few games here and there, but nothing has been consistent. It’s not all the coach’s fault, as they do have 30-year-old Kareem Hunt leading the charge, and Isaiah Pacheco just doesn’t seem to be the same guy anymore. Hunt doesn’t have much burst anymore, and is now a power back where he used to be a dynamic back.
Some of that is the front office’s fault. Some of it is the coaching staff’s fault, though. For example, they just don’t run enough from under center. They’ve gotten better at it, but still need more. There should be no reason at all that Mahomes has led the team in rushing in four games this season.
Bieniemy has turned around a rushing unit that was one of the league’s worst in the Bears, and now they rank as one of the best in the entire NFL. Not to mention, the Bears’ offense as a whole, with former Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson running the show, is really good. The Bears’ rushing offense is ranked No. 2 in Yards Per Game at 153.8 YPG. Bieniemy is responsible for the resurrection of D’Andre Swift, too.
The Chiefs also miss Bieniemy because of his coaching style. He’s a motivator, and as former Chiefs wide receiver Gehrig Dieter tweeted out, he demands success. Bieniemy is a straight shooter, and that’s worked with Kansas City. Nagy is the complete opposite and is much more reserved and laid back. The Chiefs can’t afford that coaching style right now.
Who knows, maybe we’ll see Bieniemy back in red next season. If Andy Reid offers him a job higher than what he has with Chicago, why would he say no?
